How to Make Candles Last Longer

There’s something special about lighting a candle at the end of a long day. The soft glow, the comforting scent, and the calm atmosphere can completely change the feeling of a space.

At Chispas, we hand-pour every candle using coconut soy wax, clean fragrance oils, and wood wicks designed to create a warm and relaxing experience. But like any quality candle, proper care makes a big difference in how well it burns and how long it lasts.

Here are some simple ways to get the most out of your candle.

1. Let the Wax Melt Evenly on the First Burn

The first burn is the most important.

When lighting your candle for the first time, allow the melted wax pool to reach close to the edges of the container before blowing it out. This usually takes around 2 to 3 hours, depending on the size of the candle.

Why does this matter?

Candles have a “memory.” If you extinguish the flame too early, the wax may begin tunneling down the center instead of melting evenly across the surface. Over time, this wastes wax and shortens the life of your candle.

A full melt pool helps create:

  • A cleaner burn
  • Better fragrance throw
  • Longer candle life
  • More even wax usage

2. Trim the Wick Before Each Burn

Keeping your wick trimmed is one of the easiest ways to improve candle performance.

For wood wick candles, gently remove the burnt wood from the previous burn before relighting. A wick that is too long can create:

  • A flame that burns too high
  • Excess soot
  • Faster wax consumption
  • Uneven burning

The ideal wood wick height is short and clean before each use.

3. Avoid Burning Your Candle for Too Long

While candles create a cozy atmosphere, burning them for excessive periods can overheat the wax and container.

For best results:

  • Burn your candle between 2–4 hours at a time
  • Allow the candle to cool before relighting

This helps preserve both the fragrance quality and the candle itself.

4. Keep Candles Away from Drafts

Airflow affects how evenly a candle burns.

Try to avoid placing candles near:

  • Open windows
  • Ceiling fans
  • Air vents
  • Strong airflow

Drafts can cause flickering flames, uneven wax pools, and faster burning.

A calm environment creates the best candle experience.

5. Store Your Candles Properly

Candles are sensitive to heat and direct sunlight.

To preserve scent quality and appearance:

  • Store candles in a cool, dry place
  • Keep lids on when not in use
  • Avoid direct sunlight

Proper storage helps your candle maintain its fragrance strength over time.

6. Stop Burning When Wax Gets Low

For safety, discontinue use when about 1/4 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container.

This prevents overheating and protects surfaces underneath the candle.

Create Moments That Last

Candles are more than home fragrance. They become part of routines, quiet evenings, conversations, and moments of rest.

With proper care, your candle can provide a cleaner, longer-lasting experience while filling your space with warmth and comfort.

At Chispas, every candle is inspired by moments that matter — thoughtfully hand-poured to bring warmth into your home.
